Joby MPod Mini Stand Review

Joby GorillaPods are everywhere. Their unique design allows them to be used in a myriad of scenarios, from hanging off a tree branch, to sitting horizontally on a rocky environment. But there’s just one problem with the GorilaPods – they’re a bit big for sitting on your desk or carrying around in your daily bag that’s already filled, if not overfilled.

This is the market the Joby MPod mini stand aims to fill. It’s a ultra small and compact smartphone stand that looks nice on your desk at home or work. And with its roots from the GorillaPod, it can also be used outside too, like when you go on holiday and want to take a few hands-free snaps of you basking in the sun to make your work colleagues back at the office jealous. :)

The design of the MPod mini stand is very simplistic and takes its inspiration from the GorillaPods, with just two distinct differences from its bigger brother:

  1. A non-detachable elastic ‘jaw’ is used to grip & hold your smartphone.
  2. and a much smaller size.

Like its bigger brother, the MPod mini stand is very flexible and can adapt to practically any environment you use it in.

The elastic ‘jaw’ design, compresses down to make the overall stand even more compact when not in use/transportation.

The build quality if top notch and the overall design is great. The only concern I have is the elastic band, I’m not sure how long it would last (but in saying so, I’ve had mine for over 6 months now and it’s still solid).

From my experience of trying to use it as a tripod for my Lumia 930. I have found that, the angle that you can set your phone to is very limited due to the small compact size. Thus my MPod mini stand spends its days on my desk as a smartphone holder for phones that I do not have a dedicated dock.

Final Impressions

I have no hesitation in recommending the Joby MPod mini stand to others who are looking for a universal smartphone holder for their desk, but as a smartphone tripod, I would point you back at the GorillaPod.
